The problem with Dita and why phone noise is more than just an annoyance

Have you ever been bothered on a bus or train by people shouting into their mobile phones or playing loud music? Here's what one Metro reader recommended:

"I put my book down, put my own phone on and give them a rendition of Radar Love by Dutch rockers Golden Earring. If I have slightly older commuters in my vicinity, I go easy on them and play, I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing by The New Seekers."

The Guardian, Saturday, 10th January 2026, page 91.

'There is one story we never tell’: will old family photos bring joy to my ailing mother – or remind us of dark secrets?
by Stephen Kelman

Stephen Kelman wrote movingly about his mother’s Alzheimer’s and the task of clearing things from her home of over 50 years.

"Some things make useful props to awaken the stories at slumber inside her. I bring autographs collected from her time working behind the bar at Caesar’s Palace, a long-defunct Luton nightclub that attracted some big name acts in its 1970s heyday. Showing her Gene Pitney’s signed headshot, she surprises me by naming 24 Hours From Tulsa, one of his most famous songs; she watches an old performance on YouTube with something approaching rapture, a state she hasn’t occupied for so long I’d assumed it was beyond her. And look, there are Cannon and Ball and Frank Carson, the Drifters and the New Seekers, Des O’Connor and the Krankies."
